Redesigning a modern video call interface for smart glasses in healthcare
TeleVU Innovations, a Canadian health tech startup, partnered with Bloorsoft to redesign the video call interface for their smart glasses, used by healthcare providers to communicate with remote users. Our work included adding functionality for window resizing, screen sharing, multiple video sources, and a Zoom-like layout. Using React, JavaScript, AWS, WebSockets, and MUI for UI components, we modernized the interface to enhance the remote care experience.
Challenge
TeleVU Innovations, a Canadian health tech startup, provides cutting-edge remote healthcare solutions using smart glasses to enable real-time communication between healthcare providers and patients or care providers in remote locations. While their existing video call interface was functional, it lacked the flexibility and modern features needed to meet the demands of healthcare professionals. TeleVU needed a redesigned interface that could handle dynamic interactions, support multiple video sources, and offer a more user-friendly experience similar to popular platforms like Zoom.
The challenge was to enhance the interface without disrupting the core functionality of their proprietary video calling system, ensuring that the new features—such as window resizing, screen sharing, and additional video sources—would integrate seamlessly with their current tech stack.
Solution
Bloorsoft worked closely with TeleVU to redesign their video call interface, focusing on usability, flexibility, and efficiency. We incorporated a series of enhancements to provide healthcare providers with a more robust tool for remote care delivery.
Modernizing the User Interface:Using React and MUI, we completely overhauled the interface to allow users to resize windows, making it easier to manage multiple video streams and resources during consultations. This functionality empowered healthcare providers to view patient information, video feeds, and other resources all in one place without needing to switch between screens.
Screen Sharing Integration:One of the key requests from TeleVU was to allow healthcare providers to share their screens with the remote care recipient. We integrated screen sharing functionality that enabled seamless collaboration and real-time communication, allowing remote consultations to be more interactive. Care providers could share important data, visuals, or documents in a streamlined manner, improving the overall quality of remote medical care.
Multiple Video Source Support:TeleVU’s system required the ability to connect multiple video sources, allowing healthcare providers to view feeds from both the smart glasses and additional cameras or devices. We developed and integrated this functionality, ensuring that multiple video sources could be viewed and managed simultaneously. This feature provided enhanced flexibility for consultations, as providers could monitor patients from various angles or devices.
Enhanced Layout Similar to Zoom:To make the interface more intuitive, we designed a layout inspired by the popular Zoom interface. This included the ability to switch between speaker and gallery views, adjust the layout based on the number of participants, and provide easy access to controls for managing calls. These improvements brought a familiar and user-friendly experience to the healthcare providers using TeleVU’s platform, reducing training time and increasing productivity.
Backend and Real-Time Communication Enhancements:To support real-time communication, we worked with TeleVU’s proprietary video calling backend and integrated WebSockets to ensure low-latency, high-quality video and audio streaming. Our solution maintained the stability and reliability of their backend while introducing the new features without adding unnecessary complexity.
